As a guitarist I am saddened by the Guitar Hero craze.
Why?
Because I believe that if kids put in as much time and effort into practicing a real instrument as they do plinking away on the plastic controller they actually could develop some real musical talent.
I have played the game and must admit it is pretty difficult at first (I suspect that actually being able to play the guitar handicaps your ability to play the game well) but becomes fun once you get the hang of it. But is it keeping kids from wanting to play the real thing? If not, does the expedited gratification from being able to "play guitar" on the game breed impatience in the person trying to learn the real instrument after the game inspires them to pick up the axe?
Have I invested too much of my precious time into this matter?
Give me your thoughts!
